Browser Updates Causing Confusion

  • Websites today are composed of 3 main properties.

    The first property is the domain. It is used to connect the IP address of a server, with the content of what the server is hosting. It does so by the use of ports, allowing data to be sent and received through them.

    The second property is the flow of data. Outbound data brings web pages to you. Inbound data collects content and stores it remotely. This happens while the web server is communicating through the web browser on the port specified in the first property via a domain redirection scheme.

    The third property is the transfer of data itself. Of which, two common varieties of data transfer exist. Secure, encrypted data. And not secure, raw source code. Such source code itself, is the language of communication itself, between the server and the browser. Sometimes, such languages can be used as a tool, to do things other than what the communication between the server and the browser is asking for. Which is why, data encryption is so important. It blocks such a purpose from happening beyond its intended use, and to also provided a dedicated, private, data channel between data flow and its target.

    Such data can be transfered in terms of simple links we are aware of all the time. We find them inside our web address bar, within the browsers we use to connect computers together through the internet. Among other things, the address bar lets us know where we are, and recently, if what we are doing is safe. Such safety is at risk in today's day and age, due to so many people misusing the purpose of communication, web servers do their best to provide. Which is why, encrypted data, helps prevent attacks of such a nature, in a secure, safe, dedicated and private environment for a specific type of data flow to emerge.

    Browser companies, have long since been aware of the challenge communication tools face when it comes to the issue of encrypted data. This is why, in March of 2017, major browser companies keeping their browsers up to date, have built into their core updates, a system which detects the encryption of data, and lets you know if a website is secure, or not secure. This is to protect information that you post to such websites. The warning lets you know the data you enter, can be intercepted instead of being targeted towards its intended audience. In this way, your data can be used by others who shouldn't have access to it using tracking and monitoring techniques through browser cookies, a way browsers store data associated with websites you visit and remember personal and sensitive information. In short, not all websites have updated to support encrypted data, but times are changing, and soon, browsers may stop giving you the ability to enter data on insecure pages.

    What this means for you, is if data you enter on trusted sites has been used correctly, you don't need to worry. But such sites have to update to encrypted forms of data, so the warning message doesn't confuse you, into thinking you are being attacked by such a website. If data is being used maliciously, this is web browsers new way of helping protect you. Although some people may say the time is a bit too unstable or potentially misunderstood seeming as how the way browser companies went about making such an issue, is somewhat misleading.

    If you are a web owner and you deal in trusted, sensitive information. IT is a good idea to update your site to SSL certificates. So you and your users can remain safe.

    If you are a malicious website hacker, your chances of getting access to peoples personal and sensitive information just became a lot harder to do.

    If you are a regular web user who just wants to access things the way you were used to, rest assured, little has changed now to stop you from doing so. If you can ignore the warning until a website you love and trusts, updates its protocol to install SSL certificates, you will be all set.

    Just be sure to not advertise the website (s) which have not updated such practices to the new change. Otherwise, people looking for such information, have an easy target. Instead, try to contact the website owner privately to see what can be arranged if you notice the s in the URL is not present.

    Some website owners aren't as tech savy as others, so just be patient. For the update has everything to do with the end of life support for non secure data, which will eventually, make website communication better reliable in the times to come.
